Approach & Goals

Our dedication to attentive client service and in-depth industry knowledge produces a solid foundation for projects of varying scales and character. Whether modern, contemporary or historic, we always consider the importance of a house as home – as a place to nurture and shape the lives of those who dwell there. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with an enjoyable experience, a home where your family’s needs are met, and a high-quality design that endures through time.

Our work represents a balanced and contextual approach to space and form, a strong connection to the outdoors and generous use of natural light. We employ a rigorous planning process to maximize square footage. We believe in creating ‘right-sized’ layouts that are logical, functional and help optimize energy performance and cost-efficiency. We are skilled at blending timeless features with cutting edge technologies, construction techniques and environmentally friendly materials. We also understand that a house is a major financial investment, and that design and real estate considerations are closely related. For these reasons and more, we believe that it is worth the extra investment to design carefully and to build well.

Tom Harden Architect

Tom’s involvement with building and design began while working as a carpenter in his 20’s. He gained an appreciation of quality craftsmanship and the trades and the challenges of building well. He was also drawn to study architecture by the social and environmental dimensions of good design, and went on to earn a Master of Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and a graduate degree in Urban and Environmental Policy from Tufts University. After working in architectural offices in San Francisco and Boston on numerous single- and multi-family residential projects, he made the decision to start his own practice in 2000.

Tom enjoys the challenges of residential design, bringing both the vision of a generalist and the focused expertise of a specialist to every project. He loves to work collaboratively with his clients – listening, interpreting and transforming their ideas into reality, and often finding innovative ways to reconcile a wish list with a budget. He is passionate about sustainable design, and strives to seamlessly incorporate environmentally conscious thinking into his work.

Tom is a licensed Architect in the state of Massachusetts, certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). He is a LEED Accredited Professional, certified by the US Green Building Council, and a member of the Boston Society of Architects and the American Institute of Architects. He has served with several municipal and nonprofit agencies developing housing, and is a former chairman of the Lexington Planning Board.
